HISTORY OF RODWAY HILL GOLF CLUB

Rodway Hill Golf course, built in 1990 and opened in 1991, sits on the Western side of the city of Gloucester between the river Severn and the Royal Forest of Dean. Originally just 9 holes, it was soon expanded to a full 18 hole, 6000 yards plus, course and has extensive views across the City of Gloucester to the Cotswold hills. Good use of the natural features of the land and thousands of young trees has turned this into a course which will test golfers of all abilities whilst not discouraging the less experienced player.

The Club was also formed in 1991 and started with just 16 members. Over the years the membership has grown to over 400 who enjoy a wide and varied programme of golf competitions throughout the year. The Club has a number of teams playing formal and friendly golf competitions. As a fully affiliated member of Gloucestershire Golf Union and the English Ladies Golf Association, the Club issues handicaps that are recognised throughout the world.

In 1993, the Club was converted to a company limited by guarantee (which means that in the event of insolvency, each member can be called upon to contribute to the Club's debts to a maximum of £1) and the management structure of the club was changed. As with all companies, the business is formally run by a board of directors who are entirely responsible for the operation of the company. The directors are the Captain, Vice-Captain, Secretary, Treasurer, Handicap Secretary and one further "non-executive" director who need not be otherwise involved in the operational side of the club.

Behind the directors is the General Committee which meets monthly to discuss and decide on, virtually all day to day matters of concern to the Club and its members. There are sub-committees covering Ladies, Seniors, Competitions and Handicaps, which have delegated authority from the General Committee to operate specific parts of the Club's responsibilities. With the exception of the Ladies committee, which has to be elected by the Lady Members, the sub committees are appointed by the General Committee from volunteers. The subcommittees then report back to the main committee for ratification of decisions they would like made.

The Club has no differentiation between different categories of members, and everyone pays the same annual subscription (currently £35). Any member is entitled to the same rights as any other member because they are all full members of the same club.

The Rules of the club are set out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the company which incorporates the Constitution of the club.
